  1. The Khalifa family ruled Bahrain for many years.  Then Bahrain became a
  2. protectorate from 1861 until 1971.  
  3. In the past pearls, shrimp, fruits, and vegetables were the important
  4. mainstays of Bahrain.  However, an important resource was discovered in
  5. 1932.  This resource was oil, which helped the nation thrive.  Bahrain joined
  6. the Arab oil embargo against the U.S. and other nations in retaliation for the
  7. help provided by the U.S. to Israel during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
  8. Saudi Arabia built a $1 billion causeway connecting Bahrain with Arabia.
